Japan: A Journey of Culture, Cuisine, and Captivating Experiences

In February 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Japan with JNTO (Japan National Tourism Organization), and it was an experience like no other. From the moment I boarded my Japan Airlines (JAL) flight, I knew this trip would be special. The food onboard was amazing, offering both American and traditional Japanese cuisine, and the service was outstanding, thanks to the attentive crew.

Tokyo: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Upon arriving at Haneda Airport, the closest airport to Tokyo's city center, I was ready to dive into the vibrant city. Thanks to the meticulous planning by Abercrombie & Kent and JNTO, everything was taken care of, and I could fully immerse myself in the experience without any worries.

Staying at the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi was a highlight. The views of the city skyline from the outdoor lounge were breathtaking, and it's definitely worth getting a room with a view. One of the fun facts I learned during my stay was that Italian food is the second most popular cuisine in Japan, right behind Japanese food. Additionally, ramen is considered fast food for lunch, not dinner.

Exploring Tokyo further, I discovered my newfound love for Matcha tea and visited must-see spots like the Meiji Shrine and the bustling Shibuya Crossing. TeamLab Borderless, an interactive digital art museum, was another highlight that I highly recommend looking up. Learning about Japan's two main religions, Buddhism and Shintoism, was fascinating. These religions coexist harmoniously, and I encourage everyone to explore their rich histories and practices.

Cultural Insights and Luxurious Retreats

Aman Tokyo provided a luxurious stay with fabulous rooms and a great location. One of the unique experiences was visiting a private Shinto shrine where I witnessed a traditional dance and learned the proper protocol for entering shrines. Understanding the different levels of bowing, based on the level of respect, was an eye-opening cultural lesson.

Japanese people are incredibly respectful, and it's customary to take your trash with you to dispose of at your hotel or home, contributing to the city's cleanliness and safety. Shopping in Tokyo is also a delight, with the best selection of international luxury brands. For more traditional and local wares, a trip to Kyoto is a must.

Zen Experiences and Historical Insights

Amanemu, located in a serene and secluded area, offered the most beautiful spa experience I've ever had. Dining with a monk at Tenryuji Temple and participating in meditation was a unique and enriching experience. It was interesting to learn that the monk was originally from Connecticut!

Traveling on Japan's bullet trains was another fascinating adventure. With only a minute to get on and off, having a guide to assist was invaluable. The local trains were equally clean and efficient, making travel seamless.

A Whirlwind of Cultural Delights in Kyoto

Kyoto, with its timeless charm and rich cultural heritage, provided two days filled with unforgettable experiences. Our journey began in Arashiyama with lunch at the serene Tenryuji Temple. Donning traditional kimonos, we participated in a tea ceremony before exploring the temple gardens and the enchanting bamboo forest, escorted by a knowledgeable monk. After this enriching morning, we checked into the luxurious Ritz Carlton Kyoto.

We ventured to the Akashi Fish Auction, followed by a sushi lunch featuring the freshest catch of the day. Our cultural exploration continued with a tour of the iconic Himeji Castle, complete with a special sword demonstration. Returning to Kyoto, we visited the stunning Kiyomizu Temple and wandered through the charming local shopping streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, soaking in the traditional ambiance and vibrant local culture.

Art and Adventure on Naoshima Island

A visit to Naoshima, the art island, was a day trip from Kyoto that I highly recommend. Staying at Benesse House, which might be the only place to stay, was a unique experience. However, making reservations can be challenging. The journey involved multiple transfers, including an overland transfer, local train, ferry, and even the option of a helicopter ride, weather permitting.

Throughout the trip, I was continually impressed by the respectfulness and cleanliness of Japanese culture, the incredible cuisine, and the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Whether it's visiting a local 7-11 for their famous egg salad sandwiches or exploring the serene Amanemu spa, every moment in Japan was unforgettable.
